Most ophthalmologists are in Bangkok or big cities so these patients have few chances to see an ophthalmologist or they may have to queue for eye surgery for a year.

In 2003, Eye Department made the project of Mobile Cataract Surgery Unit together with ITV television station in wilderness areas. At the beginning, Eye Department launched the mobile unit only once a year and launched surgery for about 10-20 patients.

Later in 2005, Banphaeo Hospital had participated in Chalermprakiat Cataract Surgery Project together with National Health Security Office (NHSO) by launching the mobile unit nationwide on weekend for providing eye surgery in various provinces almost every week. There were also various partners and donors donated surgical instruments, including a mobile eye surgery unit truck consisted of 4 operation beds which had been developed infection prevention, sterilized equipments, and developed to the highest standard surgical team. Now the surgical team is able to operate eye surgery up to 350 patients per 3 days. There are almost 50,000 cataract patients undergone surgery from 50 provinces.

At present, Mobile Eye and Cataract Surgery Unit of Eye and Cataract Excellence Center is considered to be the largest eye surgical team in Thailand. There are ophthalmologists skilled in surgery, including complication care system and complete infection prevention system.
